Tesla Offers 5,000 km of Free Charging for Used Model S and X

The commercial argument of free charging is making a comeback at Tesla, which offers it until December 31, 2023, on its Model S and X used cars.

At oil companies, selling fuel at cost price is a very strong commercial tactic to attract drivers. And so what if the actual margin – and therefore the discount – is only 1 to 2 cents per liter. It still works.

At Tesla, the gimmick is free charging. Tesla offers, for any used Model X or Model S delivered before December 31, 2023, 5000 km of free Supercharging to use within a year. Note: this gift is non-transferable if you sell your car before the end date or mileage limit!

Let’s get out the calculator to estimate the discount. Take the case of a Tesla Model S 75 D from 2018. Its homologated consumption is 18.8 kW/100 km. In practice, let’s round up to the more realistic value of 20 kW/100 km. To travel 5000 kilometers, you would need to recharge 1000 kW.

As of October 31, 2023, the cost per kW is charged by Tesla 35 cents per euro in off-peak hours and 39 cents during peak hours (4-8 p.m.). If you’re not subscribed, this rate rises to 46 and 51 cents respectively.

If you are subscribed, the savings would be 1000 kW x €0.35 = €350.

We might be tempted to say there are no small savings. But you can view this information from another perspective!

These 5000 kilometers offered, if traveled by an equivalent gasoline or diesel vehicle, would not have cost the same. Tesla is aiming here to turn you into an electric motorist with its used vehicle lineup.

For a sedan like the Model S, fuel consumption would reasonably be around 10 liters / 100 km, or 500 liters for the total distance. At €1.90 per liter, the expense would be:

500 liters x €1.90 = €950

From this perspective, the operation is already much more interesting.
