Tesla Model Y, forever the first

The Tesla Model Y has overtaken the Dacia Sandero to become the best-selling vehicle in Europe in 2023, a first for an electric car.

When Tesla launched its Model S on the market, the idea that an electric vehicle would become the best-selling car in Europe a decade later seemed like science fiction. Too expensive, too heavy, impossible to use due to limited range, or even dangerous because of the fire risk from batteries, nothing was spared for the wheel of electricity fairy.

The latest figures announced leave no room for doubt; the Tesla Model Y is crowned the European sales champion in 2023. It even has the luxury of beating the Dacia Sandero, which is more than three times cheaper!

The American electric pioneer Tesla notably saw its sales almost double in Europe in 2023. This growth was of course made possible thanks to very aggressive pricing and a frenzy of promotions never seen before in the automotive industry. With over 250,000 cars sold in 2023, the Model Y is unlikely to stop there. Now produced at the giant factory of the manufacturer near Berlin, it remains eligible for the Ecological Bonus in France and is sure to avoid potential European penalties that could impact Chinese models. Like its little sister Model 3, it is also expected to undergo a facelift very soon.

The Tesla phenomenon is indeed enduring and enjoys the luxury of surpassing historic manufacturers such as Volvo or Nissan on the old continent. The Model Y will forever remain the first electric car, and the first SUV, to top the European sales charts, succeeding among others the Volkswagen Golf or Peugeot 208.
