Tesla Model Y: Information, Range, and Price of the Electric SUV

The Model Y confirms the growing success of Tesla vehicles. Here is all the information you need to know about this electric SUV.

With the Model Y, Tesla has introduced a second SUV that is more affordable than the Model X and Model S. Unsurprisingly, the vehicle has been quite successful since its launch in 2019, becoming the manufacturer’s best seller. In Europe, it even reached the top spot in the best-selling electric car rankings in the first half of 2022, ahead of the Model 3 and the Fiat 500.

Dimensions of the Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Model Y weighs nearly 2 tons. It measures 4.75 meters in length, 2.13 meters in width, and 1.62 meters in height. Classified as a family SUV, it faces numerous competing models. These include the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, or Mercedes EQB. Although slightly less premium, the Skoda Enyaq can also be considered a rival of the Model Y.

Even though it is also available in a 7-seater configuration, the Tesla Model Y offered here is only in a 5-seater version. It features a large trunk of 854 liters. When the rear seats are folded down, the volume increases to 2,041 liters. These high figures make the Model Y one of the most spacious vehicles in its segment. Additionally, there is an extra storage compartment of 117 liters at the front.

Motor and Battery of the Tesla Model Y

In France, Tesla only markets the Model Y with 2 electric motors and all-wheel drive. The range consists of two versions: the Long Range and the Model Y Performance.

The Long Range offers already impressive performance, with a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 5 seconds and a top speed of 217 km/h. But the Performance is even faster: it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 250 km/h.

Note that there is some ambiguity regarding the power outputs, which Tesla does not specify. It appears that the motors are similar to those in the Model 3. Estimates suggest a front/rear duo of 158 and 283 horsepower in the Long Range and 215/298 horsepower in the Performance model.

Range and Charging of the Tesla Model Y

Tesla also does not disclose the capacity of the batteries used in its models. However, estimations estimate the battery capacity of the Model Y at 75 kWh.

Regarding range, the Model Y Long Range has an official WLTP combined cycle value of 533 km. The Performance version is credited with a range of 514 km.

The Tesla Model Y has an onboard charger of 11 kW. When charged with a 7.4 kW wallbox, it takes approximately 11 hours to reach 100%. On a Tesla Supercharger, the vehicle can theoretically handle up to 250 kW of power and charge from 0 to 100% in about 45 minutes.

Price and Equipment of the Tesla Model Y

The prices of the Tesla Model Y are increasing regularly. Currently, the Long Range starts at €64,990 and the Performance at €69,990. Both exceed the €60,000 ceiling stated in the green bonus scheme.

By choosing options, the total cost can quickly rise by several thousand euros. In addition to paid paint colors and a black-and-white interior, Tesla offers optional 20-inch wheels at €2,100, or an Extended Features Autopilot system at €7,500.

Standard equipment includes a panoramic sunroof, a 15-inch central touchscreen, a wireless charging pad for 2 phones, and vegan upholstery. Heated seats (front and rear) and power seats (front only) are also included as standard. The Tesla Model Y Performance version additionally features a Performance Pack including 21-inch wheels, specialized brakes, lowered suspensions, and an aluminum pedal set.

For the European market, the Performance versions of the Tesla Model Y are produced at the new Berlin factory (Germany). Conversely, the Long Range models are assembled in China at the Shanghai plant.
