Renault Kangoo e-tech

Born with internal combustion engines, the latest generation of Kangoo was subsequently offered in an E-Tech electric version.

With this vehicle, Renault offers an interesting alternative to the Peugeot e-Rifter and its clones from the Stellantis group (Citroën ë-Berlingo and Opel Combo-e Life). The Kangoo E-Tech electric is produced in France, at the Maubeuge factory. The motor and chargers are also manufactured on national territory. They come from the Cléon plant, which already produces the engine for the Mégane E-Tech.

Compared to the first-generation Kangoo with rounded shapes, this latest generation appears much more serious.

Dimensions and style of the Renault Kangoo E-Tech electric

Visually, the electric Kangoo is almost identical to the thermal versions. The only elements that distinguish it from the rest of the range are the specific grille and the E-Tech monogram on the tailgate. The dashboard conceals the utility origins of the vehicle quite well.

The electric microvan measures 4.5 meters long. Capable of accommodating 5 passengers, it has an 850-liter trunk under the dashboard, a volume greater than the 775 liters of a Peugeot e-Rifter. Once the bench seat is folded down, the load volume can increase to 2,500 liters. The Kangoo e-Tech features a sliding bench seat over 14 cm, allowing for the adjustment of the compromise between trunk space and rear seat occupancy.

On certain versions, the roof bars can be repositioned. The optimal configuration is chosen based on the size and shape of the transported object. The maneuver requires no tools.

Spacious, the Kangoo E-Tech also offers large storage compartments.

Motor and battery of the Renault Kangoo E-Tech electric

The Kangoo E-Tech’s motor delivers 90 kW (about 120 hp) and 245 Nm of torque. It is connected to a 45 kWh capacity battery. This battery is guaranteed for 8 years or 160,000 km. Renault commits to replacing it free of charge if the capacity drops below 70% within this period.

The vehicle’s performance is modest. 0 to 100 km/h takes over 12 seconds, and the maximum speed peaks at 135 km/h.

Range and charging

According to the WLTP mixed cycle, the Kangoo E-Tech’s range reaches 285 km. The model from the Losange brand does not significantly differ from its main rivals in this regard. Indeed, the Peugeot e-Rifter has a maximum range credited at 282 km.

The vehicle offers an Eco driving mode, which helps optimize the range at the expense of performance. Once engaged, the Kangoo’s motor provides only 56 kW, and the top speed drops to 110 km/h.

The customer can choose between two onboard chargers: one of 11 kW and another of 22 kW. The latter allows access to fast charging via DC. With this, the charging power can reach 80 kW on a compatible station. The Kangoo E-Tech then recovers 170 km of range in 30 minutes, according to Renault.

Note: the Kangoo E-Tech is not compatible with fast charging unless the customer has selected the necessary option.

Price and equipment

The Kangoo E-Tech was launched in November. Prices start at €37,500, excluding ecological bonus. In terms of trims, the range includes two levels: Equilibre and Techno.

In its Equilibre trim, the Kangoo E-Tech comes standard with automatic headlights and wipers, cruise control / speed limiter, active lane keeping system, a sliding rear bench, air conditioning, and a rear parking sensor.

The Techno version adds an 8″ touchscreen compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a rearview camera, aviation tablets, a keyless entry/start system, the adjustable roof bars mentioned above, LED headlights, and sliding side doors on both sides. The wheels increase to 17 inches, and the interior appears more upscale, thanks in part to specific upholstery and faux wood panels on the dashboard.

Each trim can be combined with either the 11 kW or 22 kW charger.
