Porsche Taycan: a Major Update Coming Soon

Porsche is fine-tuning its electric sedan, the Taycan, which is now mid-career. Increasing range is at the heart of the project.

Lauded for its performance, agility, and upscale finish, the Porsche Taycan has always faced one criticism: its range. Going fast and far with an electric car was not an easy equation to solve five years ago, when the Taycan was launched in 2019.

Then, this sedan paved the way for electric vehicles at Porsche. Since then, the learning curve has been steep. The new Macan SUV, unveiled on January 25, 2024, will introduce numerous solutions that will elevate the German manufacturer to a new dimension.

Finally, a battery up to the task?

All these lessons are now set to benefit the upcoming “2.0” Taycan in spring 2024. After 3.6 million kilometers, the update is ready to be rolled out in production. Mechanical testing took engineers to the Nevada desert, in Death Valley, at +53°C. But also to the Arctic Circle at -41°C. Intense thermal stress tests to push the new battery to its limits.

Thus, Porsche claims to have nearly halved charging times in these challenging conditions thanks to improved temperature management.

Sold over 100,000 units since its launch, the Taycan also promises a high-performance version called Turbo GT this year. This version has already beaten the lap record for an electric car at the Nürburgring, pushing Tesla 18 seconds behind! Comparisons stop here, as the two brands no longer compete in the same markets. Porsche will remain in the very high-end segment, while Tesla is shifting toward more affordable ranges between €25,000 and €50,000.
