Peugeot E-408 Electric: It’s Not Looking Good…
The Peugeot 408 family is expanding with the introduction of a 100% electric version. Is this its last chance to shine?
It’s never very reassuring to see the same model available in thermal, hybrid, and electric versions, as is now the case with the Peugeot 408. It’s not enough to simply replace the fuel tank with a large battery and the thermal engine with an electric motor to transform a combustion car into an electric one. Such a transformation requires the relocation of certain mechanical components, the reshaping of the chassis, and sometimes significant structural modifications to maintain all the qualities of the car in terms of crash resistance. And what about weight distribution, which is crucial for road handling and good dynamic behavior? In short, it’s complicated and not always successful.
But Peugeot has mastered this delicate art, as evidenced by the very successful and versatile E-3008 and E-5008. However, the 408 is already more than 2 years old, so does the graft stand a chance of succeeding?
The 100% electric Peugeot E-408 is expected to share the same technical base as the Peugeot E-308, featuring an electric motor with 210 horsepower and a 60 kWh battery. With a claimed consumption of under 15 kWh/100 km, the range could exceed 400 km. With a charging power of 120 kW, it’s clear that this is not a model from the latest generation but a crossover of two worlds. One wonders what customer base this car could target when considering what Tesla offers with the Model 3 at a lower price.
Answers to all these questions will be revealed on October 14 with the official presentation of the car at the Paris Motor Show.
