BYD Dolphin Surf

The Chinese manufacturer BYD continues its expansion in Europe with the launch of the highly anticipated Dolphin Surf.

The recipe for this small BYD is unbeatable: an electric city car with sharp design and generous equipment. Derived from the Seagull, which has been on sale in China for two years, this European version stands out for its slightly elongated format (3.99 m in length) and a design tailored to European standards, both in terms of safety and comfort.

Based on the electric platform e-Platform 3.0, the Dolphin Surf features the in-house Blade battery placed under the floor and a motor at the front. Its compact size does not hinder decent habitability, with a wheelbase of 2.50 m and a trunk capacity ranging from 308 to 1,037 liters once the rear seats are folded down.

A great little

Three levels of powertrain and autonomy are offered: the entry-level “Active” version (88 hp, 30 kWh battery) provides 220 km of WLTP range. The “Boost” model retains this motor but upgrades to 43.2 kWh for 322 km. Finally, the “Comfort” trim, which is more powerful (156 hp) and equipped with the same battery, boasts a range of 310 km. Fast charging reaches 65 or 85 kW depending on the battery, allowing it to charge from 30% to 80% in 22 minutes and from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes.

In terms of pricing, the Dolphin Surf starts at €19,990. At the high end, the Comfort version is priced at €25,990. There is only one additional cost: €650 for a color other than the standard Lime Green. A launch discount bringing its price down to €18,990 has been announced but is not yet confirmed for the first customers.

Despite the absence of an ecological bonus – it is imported from China – the Dolphin Surf attracts with its standard equipment: a 10.1-inch rotating screen, assisted driving, adaptive cruise control, rearview camera, NFC sensor for unlocking, etc. It positions itself as a serious alternative to the new Renault 5, Citroën ë-C3, and Fiat Grande Panda. And we won’t have to wait too long to see this fluorescent silhouette on our roads, as the first deliveries are expected in the summer of 2025.
