Chinese analysts did not hesitate to express their disappointment regarding the price of the new Model 3, but Tesla provided explanations…

Promises are one thing, but not keeping them can come back to bite you like a boomerang. When Elon Musk has been announcing for months in the media that the price of the new Model 3 would be lower than the previous one, it stirs excitement online and among financial analysts.

However, the reveal of this same new Model 3, on Friday, September 1, 2023, showed increased prices across all markets, both in Europe (+1000 euros for the Propulsion version) and in Asia. As for the United States, complaints are mounting because the new version is still unavailable, as the national preference has not been respected. Sacrilege.

There is also great anger in China where the Model 3 Propulsion lists at 259,900 yuan, approximately 33,200 euros… compared to 42,990 euros in France. This makes maritime transport and VAT (13% in China) from the Shanghai factory, where the units for the European market are produced, quite expensive. Nevertheless, the additional cost compared to the previous version is about 12%, which is in total contradiction with Musk’s promises.

To calm tensions, Tesla China hinted that once stocks of the current Model 3 Propulsion are depleted, the prices of the new model could then drop to around 200,000 yuan (about 25,500 euros), with an estimated timeline around the fourth quarter of 2023. Evidence of this is that the Long Range version is already 5,000 euros cheaper than the previous one, priced at 295,900 yuan, or 37,800 euros (compared to 50,990 euros in France).

Hopefully, these promises will trickle down to Europe as well…
