DeLorean-Alpha5-25

The DeLorean Alpha 5 seems to be struggling to convince potential customers. The American manufacturer has significantly scaled back its ambitions but still promises a release in 2024.

If ever a sequel or remake of Back to the Future were to be made, would the protagonists be behind the wheel of the DeLorean Alpha 5? While “Doc” Christopher Lloyd is still filming movies, the cinematic future of “Marty” Michael J. Fox ended definitively in 2021 due to the advanced stage of his Parkinson’s disease. A still little-known and sadly incurable disease that affects nearly 9 million people worldwide.

DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) was founded in 1975 in the United States, and the DMC-12 only gained posthumous fame, as only 9,351 units were sold until 1982, the year the company went bankrupt. The model’s success came after its initial marketing, during the Back to the Future saga (1985-1990). And while DMC’s revival in 2016 was aimed at restoring the old models, the manufacturer announced in 2022 the arrival of a brand-new model.

Apart from the gullwing doors, the overall style—still credited to Italdesign—bears little resemblance to the original model. The beautiful car has swapped its V6 PRV engine for a fully electric motor, much more in line with current trends but also more suitable for a hypothetical Back to the Future 4. While the power of the electric motor has not been disclosed, we already know the battery capacity (100 kWh), as well as the performance: 0 to 100 km/h in about 3 seconds, and a top speed approaching 250 km/h.

A small form for now

Those tempting details do not necessarily translate into production capabilities, as DeLorean plans to produce only 4,000 units versus the 9,351 initially planned, “due to supply chain bottlenecks“.

To try to persuade potential buyers, the manufacturer announces that the pre-order deposit costs only 83 euros, then 2,370 euros at the time of the final reservation. After this promotional period, the reservation fee should increase by about €1,000. But without additional technical information, it’s uncertain whether customers will rush to place orders. Holy crap!
