More Expensive Than the Model Y, Why Buy a Tesla Model 3?

Tesla has developed a habit of playing yo-yo with its prices. But never to the point of making the Model 3 so uncomfortable!

This comparison between Tesla’s two flagship models is, of course, only possible thanks to the Ecological Bonus which only the Model Y is eligible for. But these 4,000 euros of government discounts make a difference that places the American manufacturer’s entire price range in an unprecedented situation.

On Monday, February 19th, the Tesla Model 3 Propulsion is listed on Tesla France’s website at €42,990 versus €38,990 for a Model Y Propulsion!

Of course, the Model 3 in question is a recently facelifted model with better range. The look is refined, some would say more aerodynamic, but the idea is simply to give it more personality as an American and distinguish it from the previous model. Nothing revolutionary here. Inside, the disappearance of the toggle switches on either side of the steering wheel and the addition of an 8-inch screen for rear passengers are notable. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the range reaches 554 km in WLTP mixed cycle (450 real-world km) with a 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.1 seconds.

A Tesla or another Tesla?

But the “sedan” format is losing popularity, with customers now preferring SUVs. The first competitor to the Model 3 is none other than its American sister, the Model Y. A Model 3 that has been raised and slightly more spacious, previously sold at a higher price. But that was then. The Model Y’s range is reduced by 60 km compared to the Model 3 due to its less aerodynamic shape and 19-inch wheels as standard. In daily use, it’s hardly noticeable, and for longer trips, with 400 km autonomy, a stop is appreciated. Since its debut after the first-generation Model 3, its interior finally doesn’t fall short in terms of finish and ergonomics.

The only shadow over the Model Y is the upcoming release of its facelifted “Juniper” version. But this keeps being delayed, now expected in 2025. This prolongs the lifespan of the current model significantly.

Ultimately, it’s up to the buyer to decide whether the sedan format suits them and whether they are willing to pay more for a model that won’t be replaced soon.
