Midjourney Draws the Tesla of Its Dreams

The artificial intelligence tool that is disrupting the world of artistic creation has imagined for Mobiwisy the future Tesla Model 2.

The exercise reveals popular consciousness. By asking an artificial intelligence tool to imagine a character, a landscape, a logo, or, in this case, a forthcoming Tesla, this tool does not invent anything. It builds on our already well-defined vision of things.

The term “artificial intelligence” is overused because the processors and algorithms behind these creations are not endowed with emotion or subjective judgment. They synthesize existing knowledge and make use of it differently than a Wikipedia page or other sources, but they cannot truly “invent” something. They understand the workings of human thought, grasp what works based on statistical tools (humor jokes, the plot of a successful crime novel, the drawing style of Pixar or Disney, etc.), all of which still frighten some creative fields as recent strikes by Hollywood screenwriters have shown.

Nevertheless, artificial intelligence promises to revolutionize our daily life in the coming years. Tesla aims, ultimately, to replace its employees with a fleet of humanoid robots capable of initiative and well-controlled. Elon Musk, the narcissistic CEO, does not hide it: “Tomorrow, working will be a choice, no longer a necessity“. Are you afraid of the world to come? So are we!

At Mobiwisy, we wanted to test, just to avoid remaining idiots. So we created an account on the highly media-driven and controversial site of the moment, Midjourney. It’s the new bane for graphic creators, threatening an entire industry. Its free and instant creations are astonishing.

Once we got somewhat familiar with the tool — not simple! — we jumped in. And to the question “/imagine Prompt a baby tesla Model 2, with four doors, smaller than a Model 3“, followed by some additional details like exterior color or the orientation of the drawing (front or rear), Midjourney delivered its ideas in less than 11 seconds!

Here are two iterations: the first, red, reflecting the model of what a computer thinks our vision of a Tesla might be. A cubic vehicle inspired by the upcoming Cybertruck that a 5-year-old might have imagined. Midjourney’s guess was fairly close, as the latest rumors suggest that the Model 2 will have a design closely linked to the Cybertruck, to be immediately recognizable. Tesla will thrive by its ability to stand out from its competitors.

The second, gray and viewed from the back, is more traditional—a sort of Model 3, indeed smaller in size. And you, which one could have emerged from your imagination?
