MG MG5 at €189 per month with no down payment, still a good deal?

MG is the manufacturer most affected by the increase in customs fees, but has stocks to clear.

Admittedly, the weight of the years is starting to show on the body of the MG MG5. Marketed in France since March 2022, the model has not undergone any facelift since then, unlike the MG ZS EV. This is not even on the agenda since the next updated model will be the EHS next week.

Assumed station wagon, the MG5 measures 4,600 mm long, 1,820 mm wide, and 1,520 mm high. Its great strength is undoubtedly its record habitability, with 479 liters of trunk volume and 1,367 liters with the rear seats folded down. Flat floor and straight walls, it is a real trunk, not a convoluted storage space. To find such numbers, you have to look at the list of the latest SUVs that regularly approach 5 meters in length and 2 meters in width. The MG5 thus remains an excellent choice for families looking for space at a lower cost.

The design is somewhat dated, but the overall look remains harmonious and coherent. The cabin and dashboard have paradoxically aged less, featuring nice upholstery and a 10.25-inch touchscreen multimedia display. The driver benefits from a 7-inch instrument cluster. All of this comes as standard even in the base version, which is not the case for the latest Dacia Spring and Citroën ë-C3.

Space but no range

The Standard Range version, the one that interests us today, is equipped with a 50.3 kWh battery, powering a 175 hp (130 kW) motor and 260 Nm of torque. This Sino-British electric station wagon accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 185 km/h. It may not be extremely fast, but it’s still more than respectable!

However, the real major issue with the MG5 Standard remains its limited range of 320 km. It is impossible to consider long trips unless planning stops every hour. And breaks will be long, with rapid charging capacity limited to 70 kW. The stated charge from 20 to 80% in about thirty minutes on compatible installations is just a drop in the bucket since you won’t recover more than 170 km in WLTP cycle.

So, we have the profile of a long-distance car and the technology of an urban vehicle. The pricing is quite attractive with a Long-Term Lease for 49 months and a maximum of 40,000 km at 49 monthly payments of 189 euros, but it’s essential to reflect on how you intend to use it before heading to the dealership.
