Revolutionary Batteries for BMW Thanks to Rimac

On the occasion of the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, BMW Group will unveil the secrets of its new BMW i7. To make its luxury sedan even more high-performing, the German manufacturer has partnered with a notable ally: Croatian specialist Rimac Technology.

The challenge of this collaboration was simple: to offer more freedom to drivers. To achieve this, BMW is integrating its brand new battery technology, named Gen6. The major innovation lies in the use of cylindrical cells, a different shape from current batteries, which allows for storing 20% more energy in the same space.

So, what does this change concretely?

• Enhanced range: You will be able to drive longer on a single charge.
• Express charging: Thanks to Rimac’s expertise, the battery accepts a higher power, significantly reducing downtime at fast-charging stations.

Celebrating European expertise

This project is the result of teamwork between Germany and Croatia. While the batteries are designed with Rimac’s expertise—an enterprise renowned for its ultra-fast electric supercars—they are then sent to the Dingolfing factory in Bavaria to be installed in the BMW i7s.

Thomas Engelhardt, head of development at BMW, emphasizes that this “custom” solution makes it possible to bring the best of electric innovation to the luxury segment. For his part, Mate Rimac is pleased with this collaboration, which proves that his company can now equip mass-produced vehicles, not just exceptional sports cars.
