In England, the Renault Scenic Provokes Tesla

To carve out a niche in the electric market in England, Renault chooses to directly challenge the reference point of Tesla.

Provoking attention is always a good idea to get people talking about oneself. The English are particularly strong in this respect, especially in terms of provocation, and Renault’s advertising campaign to promote its electric Scenic is quite revealing.

To this end, the French manufacturer targets the Tesla Model Y by boldly stating that its range and prices are better. The concept of the digital and changing billboard incorporates elements from a news article published in Auto Express magazine, titled “The new Renault Scenic ridicules the Tesla Model Y in terms of price and range“, and then displays playful messages when a Tesla driver approaches.

Set up near charging stations in a London service station, the billboard – which detects the arrival of a Tesla – replaces the default display of the Auto Express article with phrases such as “It’s embarrassing” and “You surely excel in other areas“. These playful messages, which change as a Tesla passes by, will also be shared on TikTok and Meta.

Is the Scenic better than the Model Y?

These mischievous messages are sure to make Tesla drivers think. With a range of up to 610 km (WLTP), the Long Range version of the 100% electric Scenic E-Tech surpasses the best range of any Tesla Model Y by 10 km. Priced from £40,995 (€47,920), Renault’s Long Range techno version is also significantly more affordable than the entry-level Model Y with a range of 455 km, with a difference of £4,000 (approximately €4,675). At £44,990 (€52,590), the Model Y Propulsion is considerably more expensive than in France, where it is listed at €36,990 after the bonus deduction.

It is therefore true to say that the Renault Scenic is much cheaper than a Tesla Model Y in England. It is worth noting that the Long Range Propulsion version of the Tesla does not exist on the other side of the Channel!

To achieve a comparable range, English customers must therefore resort to the Model Y AWD priced at £52,990, or around €62,000. These prices are ludicrous considering this version is priced at €47,990 in France.

Finally, the entry-level Renault Scenic starts at £37,495, or approximately €43,827. Put in its local context, the French electric SUV is therefore a true “game changer” in the electric landscape in England. Tesla must respond, and quickly.
