Hyundai Ioniq 6: an original Tesla Model 3 rival

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 electric sedan showcases its style, aiming to rival the Tesla Model 3 and the upcoming Volkswagen ID Aero.

The sedan is not dead! Tesla Model S proved it by celebrating its 10th anniversary, and even its smaller sister continues its success after 5 years on the market. Polestar is also very optimistic, while the Volkswagen ID Aero is following suit, previewing the 2023 production model. Hyundai is back in the category where the current Ioniq, introduced in 2016, already laid the groundwork for electrification. Available in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric versions, this model introduces a very different next-generation design.

Clean profile design, loaded at the ends

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is the production version of the Prophecy concept introduced in spring 2020. This electric sedan features a simplistic shape with a falling roofline at the rear, reminiscent of the Citroën DS, or more recently the Mercedes CLS. However, proportions are entirely different here, with an electric powertrain enabling short overhangs.

The rear, however, is spacious, with double spoilers and an aggressive design. It features pixel-themed taillights, which are echoed by the daytime running lights integrated within the front headlights. On the front, there’s almost a hint of Kia EV6—with a dash of the facelifted Kona—in the active elements.

A Hyundai Ioniq 6 with an interior like an Ioniq 5?

You may have noticed another detail of the car. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 uses cameras instead of traditional side mirrors. This digital rearview system partly influenced the dashboard design, which features a U-shape that rises at the sides to display images on screens. Otherwise, the Ioniq 5’s theme is extensively carried over, with an air vent strip topped with a flat surface. The only element breaking this minimalistic atmosphere is the twin 12-inch screens.

The steering wheel is also borrowed from the crossover, while emphasis was placed on ambient lighting options with 64 colors. The climate controls remain physical, located at the bottom of the central console, with space between the seats housing buttons and switches for mode and driving selectors.

However, we’ll have to wait to discover more about the interior, the cabin space, and the trunk of this Hyundai Ioniq 6. It is known that recycled plastic materials, pigment-based tire waste dyeing, and plant-based oil-based paint will be part of the eco-friendly material palette.

A full reveal in July

Regarding its electric propulsion, patience is also required. Hyundai states that the full unveiling, including specifications, will happen next July. Nevertheless, we already know that the platform is the E-GMP shared with the Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Genesis GV60. Expectations include similar battery sizes of 58 and 77 kWh.

With its more aerodynamic shape, better range is expected, exceeding 550 km with the larger battery capacity. What about versions with 2 or 4-wheel drive? And a sporty N model comparable to the EV6 GT with 576 horsepower?

As for the price, the manufacturer also keeps it under wraps. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is expected to start around €45,000 to qualify for the full bonus in France. However, we know that inflation is everywhere, and the Tesla Model 3 has risen to €53,490…
