Hyundai Ioniq 5

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 generated a lot of buzz when it was unveiled. Early tests quickly confirmed that its original design was complemented by refined performance.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 was launched in 2021. With this model, Hyundai expanded its electric lineup, which until then consisted of just two models: the Ioniq and the Kona Electric. Since then, the Ioniq 6 has joined the family of Hyundai electric vehicles, while the Ioniq has been phased out.

The Ioniq 5 shares its platform with the Kia EV6. While very original, it offers a quite different character. With its futuristic and sporty lines, the technical cousin is quite distinctive, but Hyundai Ioniq 5 favors a look infused with retro references.

The angular lines of the Ioniq 5 evoke certain vehicles from the 1980s. Overall, this design appears to be quite universally appreciated.

Dimensions and Design

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 measures 4.64 meters in length, 1.89 meters in width, and 1.65 meters in height. Contrary to what official photos suggest, this model is not a city car. It is more accurately classified as a compact SUV, although some consider it primarily as a crossover.

Type-approved for 5 passengers, the Ioniq 5 features a sliding bench seat, which allows to adjust the balance between interior space and trunk capacity. The trunk volume is estimated at 527 liters. It increases to 1,587 liters with the rear seats folded down. Like other electric vehicles, the Ioniq 5 also has a small front trunk.

While the body features angular lines, the interior favors softer curves. The dashboard hosts a 12-inch touchscreen that, together with a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, forms a single integrated display unit. Like an Audi e-Tron, the Ioniq 5 can be equipped with camera mirrors. The images captured by them are projected onto two small screens on either side of the dashboard.

The two screens on the dashboard are similar in size (12 inches).

Motor and Battery

The Ioniq 5 is available with two different batteries, 58 kWh and 77 kWh. The smaller battery is paired with a 170 hp motor. The 77 kWh battery offers a choice between two power outputs: 229 or 325 hp.

Thanks to its additional motor at the front, the 325 hp version (or 77 kWh HTRAC, as per the official designation) features all-wheel drive. The less powerful versions, equipped with a single rear motor, are front-wheel drive.

In terms of performance, the chosen power level does not impact the top speed, limited to 185 km/h. It’s mainly the acceleration and overtaking capabilities that differ. The 0 to 100 km/h times clearly illustrate this: the Ioniq 5 HTRAC achieves it in 5.1 seconds, the 229 hp version in 7.3 seconds, and the 170 hp version in 8.5 seconds.

The less powerful Kona version can already accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 10 seconds.

Range and Charging

The range of the Ioniq 5 varies between 384 and 481 km (WLTP mixed cycle), depending on the battery. The wheel size also impacts this factor. Customers choosing 20-inch wheels lose between 25 and 30 km of range compared to models equipped with the standard 19-inch wheels.

Regarding charging, the Ioniq 5 excels at fast charging stations. Capable of handling very high charging powers (up to 272 kW for the larger battery version), it can theoretically go from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes. On a wallbox, the 58 kWh version charges from 10% to 100% in about 5 hours, which extends to 7 hours and 20 minutes with the 77 kWh battery.

The Ioniq 5 can theoretically charge from 10% to 80% in less than 20 minutes.

Pricing and Equipment

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 range offers three trim levels: Intuitive, Creative, and Executive. The latter is only available on the 77 kWh models and is the sole trim offered on the 77 kWh HTRAC version.

In the Intuitive trim, standard equipment includes a rearview camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 12.3-inch digital display, a touchscreen of the same dimensions with integrated navigation system, flush exterior door handles, an intelligent adaptive cruise control, heated front seats and steering wheel, and 19-inch wheels.

The Creative trim adds a wireless phone charger, a hands-free tailgate, a blind-spot monitoring system, and rear cross-traffic alert with braking function. The seats are upholstered in leather, and a synthetic leather with stitching detail appears on the dashboard and door panels.

The top-tier Executive trim includes a 360° camera, automatically retractable flush door handles, a panoramic glass roof, a head-up display with augmented reality, heated and electrically slide rear seats, and a backlit grille. This version also features a V2L reverse charger, allowing to power electrical devices using the car’s battery.

The heat pump system requires an additional €990 across the range. Camera-enabled mirrors are also available as an option, but only on the top Executive trim, costing €1,200.

Cameras instead of mirrors are available for €1,200.
