Sales of new electric cars continue to grow in Europe, with 1.5 million units, hybrid cars surging to 23% market share.
After only three quarters, the number of registered electric cars had exceeded one million in Europe. The acceleration was even more notable last fall, with 572,000 units, a +37% increase. Thus, the total of new electric cars sold in 2022 surpassed 1.5 million. This figure combines data from the 31 countries recorded by ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association) in its report.
Electric cars are catching up with diesel
An increase of 29%, slower than that of hybrids (+9%), capturing 23% of the market with 2.64 million units. However, plug-in hybrids are no longer popular, experiencing a decline of -3%, just over 1 million registrations.
While electric cars are gaining ground, they still have not surpassed diesel vehicles, which recorded a -21% decline to 1.64 million units. But this trend is expected to reverse in 2023. The last quarter showed a clear lead for electric over diesel (572,434 vs. 379,704). Gasoline engines remain the most popular in Europe in 2022, with 4.14 million sales, but they are down 12%.

With over 470,000 units, it is well ahead of the UK with 267,000, or France surpassing 200,000. Norway remains a pillar, with a near 80% electric market, a global record! Sweden has also increased its electrification, approaching 100,000 units. The Scandinavian country doubles the Netherlands and, notably, an exception in 2022, Italy. Our transalpine neighbors purchased 27% fewer electric cars, and Italy is the only country to record a decrease.
