Electric vehicles remain the driving force of the automotive market
The French automotive market continues its momentum: for the third consecutive month, registrations are increasing.
The overall rebound phenomenon is confirmed with a global increase of 3% in registrations in October according to AAA Data. Behind this good figure is a now well-identified dynamic: electric cars. Their registrations have jumped 63% year-on-year, reaching a record share of 24% of the market.
Long supported by company fleets, the transition to electric finally gains traction among private individuals. The “Electric Private Vehicle Boost” launched this summer and social leasing, opened at the end of September, are beginning to bear fruit. Registrations of electric cars for private customers thus climbed 75% compared to October 2024, versus +66% for fleets. “The new purchase incentives are showing their first significant effects,” confirms Marie-Laure Nivot, analyst at AAA Data, also highlighting a 17% increase in orders observed by the CCFA.
Mainstream brands such as Renault, Peugeot, or Hyundai are among the most dynamic, but even premium manufacturers – Audi, Mercedes, or Ford – see their electric car sales double. These increases largely compensate for the drop in petrol (-27%) and diesel (-34%) engines. Hybrids overall increase by 4%, driven by mild hybrid and range extender versions. The most buoyant segments remain Clio-type sedans, B-SUVs led by the Peugeot 2008, and large SUVs like the Tesla Model Y.

The used car market, meanwhile, slips slightly (-1%), but its electrification is accelerating: electric vehicle sales there jump 34%. The rise of mass-produced models – Peugeot e-208, Tesla Model Y, VW ID.3 – is beginning to democratize access to recent electric used vehicles. With average prices now stabilized below 33,000 euros and lower mileage, electric cars confirm their place as a growth driver… both literally and figuratively.
