Chery Challenges European Automakers

The Chinese group Chery has decided to launch its first models in Europe this year and even to establish a factory there.

Chery Automobile will therefore introduce SUVs from three different brands in Europe over the next two years. Aware that a presence on the old continent greatly simplifies access to an increasingly protectionist market, Chery will build a factory there. Let’s clarify right away that its regional director has ruled out setting up in France. The latest statements from our Minister of Finance, Bruno Le Maire, are definitely not well received in the Orient. Italy and Spain were the remaining options, and it seems that the latter country has been chosen. The production unit is expected to be based near Barcelona.

Chery remains far behind the Chinese market leaders, BYD and Geely, but is very close to its rivals Xpeng and Nio, which have already begun their entry into Europe. This is clearly a necessity for survival as competition intensifies domestically and national growth slows down.

Chery, but not only!

Besides Chery by itself, we can expect the brands Omoda and Jaecoo to arrive on all major European markets, including Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, and France.

By the end of 2025, the company will launch three SUV models for each brand, with a mix of fully electric, hybrid, and internal combustion engine vehicles to suit different markets. Electric vehicle sales, for instance, are higher in Western European countries than in southern markets.

Among the anticipated models, the all-electric Exlantix is a strong candidate. Before judging its style, it’s important to know that it is based on the technical platform chosen by Huawei for its first models. This indicates a very high quality level.

Later in the year, Chery will launch its compact crossover Omada 5, recently awarded a five-star Euro NCAP rating. Its price? Starting at 30,000 euros!
