BYD Attacks the MG4 Xpower

BYD unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show the Ocean-M concept, a sedan with a radical look aimed at the European market.

Between Dolphin and Seal, this BYD Ocean-M bears resemblance to the MG4 Xpower, especially with its tapered headlights and a two-element rear wing. Otherwise, the style remains very BYD with a clear connection to the Seal and Seal U models. No surprises with the name; it stays within the marine universe dear to the Chinese manufacturer. We just wonder how Fisker will react, as it already offers an Ocean SUV, but the brand is in serious trouble and has other priorities.

At the front, the concept features large headlights and an aggressive front splitter topped with generous air intakes. There’s no doubt about its sporty intent, reinforced by the beautiful 5-spoke racing wheels. The upper line of the doors is very high and upward-sloping, enhancing the dynamic appearance at the expense of interior brightness. Claustrophobics, you might want to skip this one! No mirrors on this BYD but rearview cameras, and integrated door handles—small details that help reduce drag coefficient by a few hundredths.

At the rear, the impressive wing is complemented by an oversized diffuser. There is a contrast between orange and black, with carbon fiber where needed. It’s still just a concept, but all this is very exciting!

No technical details have leaked yet, but the car will certainly use the latest generation of the brand’s new battery platform and perhaps the powertrain of the BYD Seal Excellence. A package that could bring much driving pleasure.

According to the media present on site who reported the initial statements from BYD officials, the prices are estimated to be between 150,000 and 200,000 yuan, roughly 20,000 to 26,500 euros. Of course, expect to pay about double in France upon commercialization.
