Renault resurrects the R8 Gordini and awakens a fierce desire to drive

With its 270 hp electric power, rear-wheel drive, and muscular silhouette, the Renault 8 Gordini Concept inspiringly transposes the spirit of the famous French sports car into a new era.

Some cars put a smile on your face even before they turn a wheel. The Renault 8 Gordini Concept belongs to this family. Unveiled today, this creation successfully navigates a delicate exercise: reviving a legend while giving it a strikingly contemporary look. The blue paint, the two white stripes, the round headlights: the reunion is immediate. But Renault has also understood what made the “Gorde” irresistible: a vibrant personality and a constant invitation to take the wheel.

First unveiled in 1964, the small sedan prepared by Amédée Gordini had made sports performance accessible to a new clientele. With a rear engine, rear-wheel drive, and demanding handling, it taught drivers to drive fast as much as it taught them to respect the mechanics. Launched in 1966, the Renault 8 Gordini Cup would extend this vocation by becoming a formidable breeding ground for drivers.

A Gordini Spirit

Sixty-two years later, Renault maintains the rear-wheel drive and installs a 270 hp electric motor at the back. The four-door sedan transforms into a two-seater coupe measuring 4.12 meters long, 1.88 meters wide, and just 1.27 meters high. With spectacular proportions, generous fenders, and a rear solidly planted on its wheels, this Gordini already seems ready to leap forward.

The design brims with intelligently updated references. Six round headlights evoke the additional lights of rally cars. The angular wheel arches recall its ancestor, while the white stripes continue into the cabin. Inside, brushed aluminum, bucket seats, and circular digital dials create a clean atmosphere focused on driving. The blue corduroy adds a delightful vintage touch.

Fully developed in-house after a competition that garnered over 300 sketches, this concept exudes a contagious enthusiasm. It will obviously be necessary to understand its weight and take the wheel to know if the dynamic promise lives up to the design. But the interpretation is convincing: Renault has preserved the distinctive signs of the model while rediscovering its taste for cheekiness.

Presented as a unique piece, with no commercialization announced, this electric R8 Gordini will be exhibited at the Paris Motor Show from October 12 to 18. Its first merit is already secured: it makes you want a style exercise to become a real car. And for a new generation to discover, in turn, the joy of driving a “Gorde.”
