New Audi A2: Is it worth spending €8,300 to charge less often?

The new compact electric from Audi promises up to 649 km of range, but its cheapest version raises a question: how much should you pay for the kilometers you rarely need?

In the electric car battle, the biggest figure often wins the first round. With its announced range of 649 km, the Audi A2 e-tron has an argument to draw attention. However, its appeal may lie at the other end of the catalog.

At €38,600, the 170 hp version comes with a 52 kWh battery and claims up to 423 km according to the WLTP cycle. To access the 84 kWh battery that allows for the famous 649 km, the price climbs to €46,900, with power increased to 231 hp. That’s an additional €8,300.

What Audi do you need?

This gap deserves more attention than the range record. For a driver who charges at home and primarily makes daily trips, the small battery may already meet their needs. The additional kilometers mostly serve during long trips when spacing out stops becomes valuable.

Another detail: choosing the larger battery does not automatically shorten the charging time. Audi claims 24 minutes to go from 10% to 80% with the 52 kWh battery, compared to 29 minutes for the 84 kWh one. The latter, however, gains more energy, thus more kilometers, during this charge.

One critical precaution remains: WLTP ranges do not guarantee a distance on the highway, especially in winter. The first tests will help assess the actual margin offered by each version.

Produced in Ingolstadt and expected by December 2026, the A2 e-tron thus invites a different way of thinking. Before paying to cross France less frequently plugged in, it’s better to look at the trips actually made each week.
