The new Range Rover GT no longer looks like a Range Rover… and that’s the whole problem

Half-sedan, half-coupe SUV, the future Range Rover GT raises questions about the evolution of one of the most iconic off-road brands.

For more than fifty years, the name Range Rover has evoked a simple idea: that of a luxury 4×4 capable of going anywhere, with a straight, imposing, and instantly recognizable silhouette. With the new Range Rover GT, the British brand takes an unexpected turn. And a question arises: what direction is it really trying to take?

Presented as the fifth member of the Range Rover family, the GT breaks with historical codes. Its profile is extremely low, its roofline swoops down, and its proportions evoke a large elevated sedan more than a traditional SUV. The prototypes, still camouflaged, clearly showcase a very aerodynamic five-door coupe silhouette, developed on the new EMA platform intended for electrified models.

A true Range Rover?

The manufacturer speaks of a “Grand Tourer,” capable of offering the comfort of a limousine while retaining the off-road capabilities specific to Range Rover. On paper, the idea is appealing. In reality, the result is striking. At first glance, this GT seems more aimed at competing with models like the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, the upcoming Jaguar Type 01, or some premium electric sedans than a true luxury SUV.

This is where all the ambiguity lies. Range Rover has built its success on an extremely strong identity. However, this GT deliberately blurs the lines. Half-sedan, half-coupe SUV, it seems to aim to attract a clientele that is no longer looking for a classic SUV. This strategy is understandable in a world where aerodynamic efficiency becomes essential for electric vehicles, but it risks diluting the brand’s DNA.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect is that at the same time, Range Rover is also preparing a much more faithful Range Rover Electric to its historical lines, as well as a Range Rover Sport Electric that maintains the muscular look of the current model.
