High-tech Continental tires for the electric Twingo

The Renault Twingo electric will be equipped with Continental tires developed to meet the demands of electric vehicles.

Renault has chosen Continental to supply first-fit its new 100% electric Twingo. The city car, which is expected to launch soon, will thus be delivered worldwide with EcoContact 7 tires mounted on 18-inch wheels.

While the choice of tire supplier often goes unnoticed, it plays a significant role in an electric vehicle. The range, noise level, and driving behavior are partially dependent on the characteristics of the tires. Manufacturers are increasingly working closely with manufacturers to develop solutions tailored to these new constraints.

From Golf Ball to Tire

For the electric Twingo, Continental provides its EcoContact 7, a tire designed to limit rolling resistance. The goal is to reduce energy losses associated with the vehicle’s movement and thus help preserve range. The manufacturer relies in particular on an architecture called “Smart Energy Casing,” which aims to reduce internal friction within the tire.

Another feature is that the tire’s sidewalls incorporate a technology called “Aerodimple.” Inspired by the principle used on golf balls, it consists of small dimples designed to reduce aerodynamic turbulence generated around the wheel. Again, the aim is to improve the overall efficiency of the vehicle.

Continental has also worked on the acoustic aspect, a particularly important criterion for an electric car. In the absence of the noise from an internal combustion engine, the sounds related to rolling become more noticeable. The tread design, called “Silent Pattern,” has been specifically engineered to limit certain sound frequencies, especially during urban driving.
