Toyota has officially inaugurated Woven City, its mobility-focused city located in Susono at the foot of Mount Fuji.
Presented as an experimental smart city, this ultra-connected city is intended to serve as a laboratory for Toyota to test cutting-edge technologies: autonomous vehicles, service robots, artificial intelligence, and new mobility systems.
The first phase covers 47,000 m² with about a dozen buildings, including modern apartments to host initial employees and researchers. During a demonstration, Toyota showcased its autonomous robots capable of delivering groceries or parking vehicles, as well as intelligent electric scooters. A preschool has also been designed to introduce children to digital tools and English from an early age.

The goal is clear: to make Woven City a showcase of intelligent mobility and sustainable urban living. The second phase of the project will quadruple its size to 182,000 m² and will house about 2,000 residents. Engineers, families, and researchers will live in this urban laboratory to test, in real-world conditions, the coexistence of humans, robots, and autonomous vehicles.
At the heart of this system is Arene, the vehicle operating system developed by Toyota. Already implemented on the Toyota RAV4, it will be refined in Woven City to become the software foundation for tomorrow’s connected cars.
