Fisker Ocean: On Board the Affordable American SUV

The American manufacturer Fisker showcased at CES the nearly final version of their affordable 100% electric SUV, named Ocean.

With a starting price of €41,900, or €35,900 after the bonus deduction, Fisker’s attractive all-electric SUV appears to be a compelling new offer. At this entry price, it already features 275 horsepower and around 440 km of WLTP range. The platform is developed by the Austrian company Magna, which will also manufacture this car, made in Europe, this fall. The batteries are sourced from the Chinese giant CATL.

The higher trims include two motors, resulting in all-wheel drive. They reach up to 550 hp and nearly €70,000, like the One series displayed on the stand at CES in Las Vegas, which we had the chance to examine more closely.

The Fisker Ocean has a rugged look with a fairly aggressive stance. Its size, still acceptable for Europe, measures 4.77 meters in length. You quickly notice that all the windows open. This even includes the rear side windows, to let a dog breathe, and the rear window. The large panoramic roof integrates solar panels capable of extending the range by a few hundred kilometers per year.

Unique swiveling screen

Inside the cabin, we are surprised to find a still early prototype. The Fisker Ocean has some fake buttons, overly firm rear seats, and plastics that do not yet have the final grain.

But most notably, the very impressive 17-inch (43 cm) rotating display does not yet show the various infotainment menus. It’s a pity, as this is one of the car’s highlights.

We did appreciate the quality of the faux Alcantara, made from recycled T-shirts. We also noticed the single-piece front seats with an original design, and the spacious rear passenger area.

Coming to France in early 2023

The first vehicles will arrive in France in early 2023, with maintenance provided by the Speedy network. However, we expect to have a chance to test a preliminary version around summer, to form a full opinion on this long-awaited model. It will also be an opportunity to compare it with Tesla Model Y, the segment benchmark.
