Mercedes EQE AMG 53 2022

Since 288 hp isn’t enough, the Mercedes EQE electric sedan is getting two high-performance AMG versions up to 687 hp… temporary.

Traditionally, internal combustion engine models are unveiled in multiple stages. The regular lineup first appears, followed by its sporty version a few weeks later. This approach persists despite the electric era at Mercedes.

The star brand had already made this move with the EQS. Why do it differently with the little sister EQE, literally a shortened version?

Mercedes EQE up to 687 horsepower

It’s no surprise that the Mercedes-Benz EQE transforms into an AMG. During its visit to Affalterbach’s subsidiary, the sedan receives a grille with vertical bars, a small rear spoiler, and more prominent side skirts.

Don’t be fooled by the term “compact” that the manufacturer dares to use; the EQE measures 4.96 m. It’s a shame it sacrifices a trunk capacity of 430 liters, as spacious as a Renault Megane E-Tech. However, the large German sedan retains the enormous “Hyperscreen” display, consisting of 3 giant screens (instrument cluster, central, and passenger).

But it’s beneath the barely modified exterior that the character changes. Yes, transitioning from one electric model to another isn’t the same as going from a modest 4-cylinder to a fiery V8. However, the power of the new AMG EQE 53 reaches up to 687 hp (460 kW) in peak. In combustion, only the Mercedes AMG GT Black Series has matched that excess with its 730 hp.

The three “Hyperscreen” giant screens display a specific interface on AMG versions.

Continuous power output drops to 626 hp (505 kW) but still delivers 950 Nm torque, against 1,000 Nm at peak.

Supercar performances, SUV weight

If you can take it to the track, 0-100 km/h is achieved in 3.3 seconds, thanks to the “4MATIC” all-wheel drive. The AMG GT sports coupe is just a bit faster (3.2 s). On the downside, the German brand specifies that it cannot sustain this performance permanently. You need to maintain a charge above 70% for this to happen.

The second version, Mercedes AMG EQE 43, with 476 hp (350 kW) and 858 Nm, should have at least half of its battery charge to do 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds.

The two motors at the front and rear continuously develop 350 kW on the AMG 43 and 460 kW on the EQE 53.

However, the EQE has no restrictions in reaching its maximum speed of 210 km/h (240 km/h on EQE 53). It’s insane. Remember that these vehicles weigh 2.5 tons, or two and a half Dacia Spring!

6 modes from 50% to… 110%

To achieve such figures, Mercedes uses the same battery as on the EQE 350. With a capacity of 90.6 kWh, it hosts around 360 pouch cells originally from CATL (supplier supplying other batteries and the EQS).

Range is approximately 500 km, highly variable depending on the model and options. The EQE 43 oscillates between 462 and 533 km, and the EQE 53 around 444 and 518 km. WLTP consumption ranges from 19.8 to 23.2 kWh per 100 km.

These are theoretical figures, especially since the car offers 5 standard modes that limit power:

  • Slippery: 50%
  • Comfort: 80% (85% on EQE 43)
  • Sport: 90%
  • Sport+ and Race Start: 100%

The EQE 53 version can add an optional Dynamic Plus pack, providing a 6th mode. Like the e-boost on a Cupra Born or Tesla’s Cheetah mode, the Mercedes sedan delivers its 505 kW/687 hp temporarily, at 110% of its potential.

A sluggish recharge?

However, the charging isn’t as fast as that of the big sister. The Mercedes-AMG EQE reaches a maximum of 170 kW DC (compared to 200 kW). It will benefit from the 336 Ionity stations with preferential rates, as well as other fast-charging stations like Fastned and Allego.

During charging, the Mercedes AMG EQE peaks at 170 kW power.

Good point: the battery preheats when approaching a fast-charging station if registered in the navigation via GPS. Outside of long trips, the AMG EQE has a built-in AC charger of 11 kW as standard, which can be upgraded to 22 kW optionally.

How much will the German company charge for these new models? Expect no less than 120,000 euros, with the AMG EQS 53 exceeding 160,000 euros. And don’t expect any bonus (only granted for models under 60,000 euros). Prices for the standard Mercedes EQE lineup are not yet available, so stay tuned.
