Volkswagen ID Buzz 2022: New details on the electric campervan

Revealed in two weeks, the new generation of Combi, the Volkswagen ID Buzz, unveils its electric motor and batteries.

The Volkswagen ID Buzz is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated automotive novelties of 2022, and perhaps THE biggest in the electric utility vehicle segment (along with the Kangoo III E-Tech). Still under camouflage, it is traveling around Europe for its initial tests, taking the opportunity to share some information.

A Volkswagen ID. Buzz in a single size

First of all, the 2022 electric Combi will have only one body style. This might hinder its mass adoption, as competitors offer 2 or even 3 versions. Its length is fixed at 4.71 meters, similar to the smaller versions from Stellantis like the Citroën ë-Jumpy.

It is also more compact than its combustion counterpart, the Transporter T6.1. Its height of 1.94 m could also pose parking challenges in spaces limited to 1.90 m, with a width of 1.98 m. To recall, two versions exist: one for individuals, the ID. Buzz shuttle, and the utility version for professionals, ID. Buzz Cargo. They differ only by a few millimeters.

In terms of load capacity, the ID Buzz offers 1,121 liters in a 5-seater configuration. The Cargo version increases that to 3.9 m³ with its 3 front seats, providing a maximum payload of 1,000 kg, placing it in the upper middle range compared to competitors (860-1,060 kg).

The 77 kWh battery of the ID.4

It is official: the ID Buzz will use the largest battery in the Volkswagen electric family. With a gross capacity of 82 kWh and 77 kWh usable, it is identical to the Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4, and ID.5. The manufacturer is therefore sharing resources by integrating it into the common MEB platform used by these models. Its range will be 440 km (420 km for the Cargo).

Like its smaller siblings, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz will feature a rear-mounted motor. It also features a power of 150 kW (204 hp), delivering 310 Nm of torque. The difference is that the top speed will be 145 km/h, but acceleration figures are not yet available. Not a major issue since it’s a utility vehicle; this isn’t its main characteristic.

The brand emphasizes that its new van will be “very agile” thanks to a low center of gravity. It highlights a turning diameter of 11 meters, making it more maneuverable than its rivals. A Peugeot e-Boxer claims 11.3 meters in short version, and up to 12.4 meters in M. The Mercedes eVito is in a similar range (12.2 m in Long body).

Revelation on March 9

The new Volkswagen ID. Buzz will finally be fully revealed, aside from its design. It will be officially presented on March 9, and pre-orders will open. Deliveries are scheduled to start in September. In the meantime, its pricing, still unknown, will likely be announced.
