Vanmoof S5 and A5 2022: The New Stars of Electric Bicycles?
This page is translated from the original post "Vanmoof S5 et A5 2022 : les nouvelles stars du vélo électrique ?" in French.

The Dutch manufacturer of connected electric bicycles unveils its new generation duo, the Vanmoof S5 and A5, more powerful and expensive.
Though still quite new (2009), the Vanmoof brand quickly made a name for itself with its minimalist design paired with comprehensive equipment. Now much more accessible, these e-bikes from the Netherlands are entering their fourth generation, not with the S4 but with the S5 accompanied by its little brother A5.
What are the differences between the Vanmoof S5 and A5?
The Dutch brand preserves the distinctive style that characterizes its bikes so well. The S5 continues to opt for a single-piece frame with the most streamlined design possible. Compared to the S4, the tubes are more uniform. Lastly, departing from the single matte gray finish, matte black is no longer fashionable.

The A5 introduces two major differences compared to the X3, one being the removal of the rear rack. The other is its now inclined top tube—no longer horizontal—to facilitate leg passage. Like previous models, its wheels are smaller, 24 inches versus 27.5 inches on the larger sibling. Their disc brakes are now perforated, which should improve a known weakness of the previous generation.

An « halo » interface to clarify
The Vanmoof S5 retains the connected lights at the ends of the top tube, housing the battery. The A5 will thus move its light to the seat tube. Beyond that, they share everything—the motor remains at the front, and the automatic gear box is integrated into the crankset. A new feature is that the chain and its cover are more discreet, enhancing the bike’s minimal aesthetic.

These electric bikes continue to avoid elements on the handlebar. Aside from brake levers and two buttons for the bell and boost, there’s no screen or gear change controls. However, the interface has changed. Gone are the small diodes indicating speed or current mode on the frame; instead, the handlebars’ “Halo” rings will display information through various colors. For example, the battery gauge on the left will be white and animate during charging. On the right, the speed in white will be accompanied by a blue bar indicating boost activation. Finally, in case of theft, the two “halos” will flash red to trigger the alarm.
Better motor, still fixed battery
Under its minimalist appearance, the motor is now more powerful, developing 68 Nm (versus 59 Nm). Like before, its 4 modes are configurable via the app, which also manages other settings. Users can still change the three-speed gear, adjust the electronic bell tone, remotely lock and unlock the bike, or geo-locate it. The latter function is also likely to be compatible with Apple Find My (same as the S3/X3).
Although it has evolved significantly, the Vanmoof S5 and A5 still feature a fixed battery. Moving into the front tube of the frame—no longer the top tube—it loses some capacity. Previously at 504 Wh, it now drops to 487 Wh on the S5 and 463 Wh on the A5. Nonetheless, the manufacturer claims the same minimum range, of 60 and 55 km respectively.

For more mobile users, the second battery remains available, clip-on to the frame. New and more practical with a handle, it promises at least 55 km of range, up from 45 previously.
Despite the capacity reduction, the overall weight has increased. The weight of the S5/A5 is 2 kg heavier, at 23 and 22 kg respectively.
Price increase for the new Vanmoof S5 and A5
After a steady decline in prices, the Dutch company now makes a sharp turn. Although the batteries are smaller, both bikes are more expensive than their predecessors. The S5 and A5 start at €2,498, which is €150 more than the S3/X3. The latter remain available to serve as entry-level models but are no longer priced at €2,198 as they were not so long ago.

And if that’s not enough, two insurance options are available. The 3-year maintenance costs €298 with Vanmoof’s “Bike Doctors,” and €348 for 3-year theft insurance. Additional options, such as the redesigned front basket and rear rack, will increase the price further.
Soon available, the two Vanmoof electric assistance bikes can be seen on the official website. However, ordering is not possible immediately; you need to join the waiting list in hopes of receiving the first units, expected to be shipped from July 2022.
