Mercedes Vision EQXX: 1000 km Range is Not a Fantasy

Mercedes tested the Vision EQXX in real-world conditions. Verdict: the concept lives up to its promises for range!
With the Vision EQXX, Mercedes aims to push the limits of electric vehicles. During the presentation of the concept earlier this year, the German brand mentioned a range exceeding 1000 km, but this figure was based on simulations.
To assess the vehicle’s actual range, the German company tested it in real-world conditions over an entire day. Departing from Sindelfingen in Germany, the EQXX crossed the Swiss Alps and northern Italy before arriving in Cassis on the French Riviera.
To ensure an accurate experience, Mercedes did not try to avoid less favorable terrains for electric cars. The EQXX climbed mountain passes and used highways, sometimes in challenging weather conditions.

Maximum efficiency
Carried out by an independent organization, the experiment proved that the 1000 km range was not just a pipe dream. “We succeeded! We traveled over 1,000 kilometers without issues on a single charge and with a consumption of only 8.7 kWh/100 km under real traffic conditions“, rejoiced Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Mercedes-Benz Group AG.
The trip, which lasted 11 hours and 32 minutes, even showed that simulations had been somewhat pessimistic. In Cassis, as the journey was ending after 1008 km, the EQXX still had 140 kilometers of range left.
The EQXX, a technological showcase
This exceptional range is partly based on extensive aerodynamic work. Streamlined bodywork, active rear spoilers and diffuser, narrower rear tracks by 50 mm: nothing was neglected. With a x of only 0.17, the EQXX offers very little resistance to the air.
The light weight of 1755 kilograms also helps limit consumption, as do the tires specifically developed by Bridgestone. Additionally, the EQXX is equipped with a solar roof capable of powering some auxiliary systems. On average, it adds about 25 km of range every 1000 km.
Of course, it’s impossible to beat autonomy records without a large battery. In this case, the EQXX’s battery has a capacity of 100 kWh. It powers an electric motor with a peak power of “only” 244 hp. A deliberate choice by Mercedes, prioritizing frugality over performance.
