This cyclist airbag deploys in the blink of an eye

In&Motion has introduced the “Stan” backpack with an airbag, which deploys in 0.1 seconds and alerts emergency services.

This new airbag is designed for cyclists, but it is not hard to imagine a similar model being developed to assist motorcyclists. The system has a storage capacity similar to that of a traditional backpack. However, this system also includes an airbag for the upper body, with all operational systems contained within the backpack.

The airbag connected to an app

Connected to the In&Motion mobile app, the system deploys in 0.1 seconds, enveloping most of the upper body of the user in the airbag. The system is intended to significantly reduce the initial impact shock to the head compared to simply wearing a bicycle helmet, with initial deceleration reduced by up to 200%.

In&Motion claims that this “softer impact on the head could reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury by up to 80%”. This reduction in trauma could decrease head injuries, which are responsible for three out of four bicycle-related fatalities.

The backpack itself has a fairly simple appearance. It closes from the top by rolling the closure for perfect waterproofing. In&Motion does not provide many details about its Stan backpack. It offers 18 liters of capacity and a pocket suitable for a laptop. No price has been set yet, but it is likely to be quite high. In&Motion announces that it is recruiting beta testers to start field trials from spring 2023.

In theory, the Stan system could be adapted for motorcyclists, with a larger airbag to cover the rider’s torso. The system would need to be updated to account for the motorcycle’s speed. It should also consider the different ways in which motorized two-wheelers crash. Thanks to the extensive existing data in this field, this should be a fairly straightforward task.
