Sony is eager to venture into the automotive market. The Japanese giant has just unveiled a concept at CES in Las Vegas. It’s already their third in 3 years.
It’s been some time now that Sony has been contemplating an entry into the automotive world. To carry out this project, the electronics giant has formed a joint venture with Honda. Evidence that progress is being made, the two partners presented a new vehicle at CES in Las Vegas, which opens its doors on January 5th. On this occasion, they also revealed the brand under which their cars will be sold: Afeela.
The prototype just unveiled does not have a name. It takes the form of a quite conventional sedan, similar in style to the 2020 Sony Vision S01. Naturally, it is equipped with a fully electric powertrain, although its specifications are not provided. The topic of range is also not addressed at this stage.
A Sony Car That Focuses on Entertainment
For now, Sony and its partner Honda want to emphasize the vehicle’s connectivity and onboard technologies. Equipped with numerous sensors and cameras (a total of 45), as well as processors supplied by Qualcomm, the Afeela should feature quite advanced autonomous driving capabilities. Inside, the dashboard is topped with a large panoramic screen, projecting images from camera mirrors at the edges. The interface is expected to offer many entertainment features. Sony and Honda aim to fully exploit the opportunities presented by the metaverse.
The production version of the Afeela will be available for order starting in 2025. The first deliveries will take place in the United States in Spring 2026. No pricing details have been announced.
