An inflatable helmet for a more confident ride

Innovations in cyclist safety are abundant, such as the Bumpair inflatable helmet.

If you are a regular reader of Mobiwisy, you probably haven’t missed our latest safety news. Swedish company Hövding has launched an airbag for cyclists that, according to the manufacturer, offers safety up to 8 times greater than a traditional helmet. Remember that nearly 242 deaths among cyclists are reported in the past 12 months, and 31 people have died while using a personal transportation device (PTD) like a scooter, according to road safety statistics.

Beyond airbag collars and backpacks with airbags, here is now the inflatable helmet introduced by French company Bumpair. For more than three years, the startup’s engineers have been studying how the injection of air helps absorb shocks to the head during a bicycle fall. According to the manufacturer, a traditional helmet only offers limited protection surface. But with Infl8(r) technology, the air is supposed to prevent the head from making contact with the ground and absorb shocks more effectively.

Significantly Superior Protection

Bumpair reports protection up to 4 times greater — less than an airbag system, but also more practical to carry since when fully deflated, it can fit into a small bag. Lastly, for those who ride in all weather conditions, the Bumpair helmet is water-repellent, windproof, and breathable.

Winner of the 2022 Road Safety Innovation Award, the Bumpair 2.0 is sold at €255 and offers four helmet sizes (S, M, L, and XL).
