Tesla will build two new factories in Nevada

To provide even more electric vehicles, Tesla is investing over €3.3 billion in factories for its batteries and the Semi truck in the United States.

Year after year, Tesla continues to set new records for electric car production. Once a niche in 2012 with fewer than 3,000 units, the American manufacturer has become a major player in the automotive industry, with more than 1.3 million vehicles in 2022. But to power these electric cars, there is a need for batteries, lots of batteries.

Nevada will produce batteries for 2 million Teslas

The very first Tesla battery factory was nicknamed Gigafactory because it produced more than one gigawatt of capacity (GWh). As the first of this scale, this site built in Nevada has been producing since 2014 and now supplies over 35 GWh of batteries annually. It also employs 17,000 people and can supply energy storage for 500,000 electric vehicles. But that’s still not enough for the two US production plants, in Fremont, California, and the new one in Austin, Texas.

Tesla is thus investing $3.6 billion (€3.3 billion) to expand this Nevada Gigafactory, as well as to build a new factory in the same state. This plant will produce the new generation of “4680” cell batteries powering Tesla Model Y and other vehicles, with a maximum capacity of 100 GWh. This can thus equip 1.5 million vehicles according to the company. The amount will also be used to produce Tesla Semi electric truck at a dedicated site.

Elon Musk’s manufacturer might reveal more details tonight as it presents its financial results and outlines its future plans.
