Launched in 2019, the VW ID.3 marks Volkswagen’s rise in electrification. Its facelift is expected to fix some teething issues, such as its finish, which can be improved.

At Mobiwisy, we had the opportunity to test the Volkswagen ID.3 during a comparative test against the Renault Megane E-Tech 100% electric. Well-equipped, spacious, and offering an interesting range, the German model had to concede defeat due to its significantly increased prices and a finish that doesn’t quite match its badge.

Aware of the room for improvement in its 100% electric compact sedan, Wolfsburg-based manufacturer listened to critics and is offering a phase 2 update to improve the model. Visually, it requires a keen eye to distinguish the restyled version. Slightly more aerodynamically streamlined, it features an evolved front bumper with increased dynamism and a new hood. The rear section incorporates “functional” taillights into the tailgate.

Internally, the VW ID.3 may not look revolutionary from the outside, but it was expected to impress on board. According to the manufacturer, new materials have been used—such as microfiber on the seats and a new molded plastic with stitching on the dashboard. And, like Volvo, no animal products were used in the construction of the ID.3.

Regarding ergonomics, there are few or no changes to report, with the retention of the famous “sensitive” touch controls. However, the German model now features a 12-inch multimedia screen, which includes the “route planner” feature that, as the name suggests, helps to set charging stops along the route based on battery capacity and traffic conditions.

The equipment also includes new features such as Park Assist Plus, which allows the ID.3 to perform parking maneuvers autonomously, and lane change assistance. That’s for the equipment.

Faster to charge and cheaper

A minor disappointment when reading the specifications, as the power and battery capacities (58 and 77 kWh) remain unchanged. However, it will be possible to charge faster up to 170 kW, compared to 135 kW previously on the Pro S version (77 kWh). Approximately 30 minutes to go from 5% to 80% charge.

According to Volkswagen France, the launch of the restyled ID.3 is planned for this summer, at a significantly lower price than the current model. The brand estimates its starting price at €44,000 (excluding the €5,000 bonus), but this will come with some concessions on the equipment.
