Tours: Electric cars must now pay for parking

The incentive for the city of Tours to reward electric vehicle owners will end on July 1, 2023.

The trap is closing. After three years of encouraging the ownership of electric vehicles to improve air quality in the city, Tours has decided to reverse course. Starting July 1, 2023, any vehicle with a Crit’Air 0 sticker (100% electric or hydrogen) will have to pay for parking.

The city’s argument is simple, even simplistic: it claims to be a victim of the success of the transition of residents to electric cars, which would harm the city’s revenue. According to a study carried out by the city of Tours, one parking space brings in about 150 euros per month for the municipality.

A second defense point concerns precisely the issue of free parking and a perverse effect resulting from it: electric cars would be “suckers” more likely to monopolize parking spaces for very long durations, to the detriment of other users… and therefore merchants. They have also warned the City Council about this problem. The danger is that residents of Tours will abandon their city center even more, favoring free parking at large shopping centers…

Another city will soon be affected by the revenue loss caused by electric cars: Paris. To compensate, the capital has made parking payments mandatory for thermal-powered two-wheelers, while their electric equivalents are (for now?) still exempt. But until when? Same for bicycles and scooters…

With the forced push towards electric cars by 2035, all current incentives will soon disappear, starting with the purchase bonus (5,000 euros for a vehicle costing less than 47,000 euros in 2023).
