The Île-de-France Region has overhauled its bicycle policy by reducing certain subsidies and creating new ones. Details.

The Île-de-France Region and the City Hall of Paris are not friends. Their two representatives, Valérie Pécresse for the former, Anne Hidalgo for the latter, maintain diametrically opposed positions (media postures?) on the issue. It’s a bit of who will make the best announcements to irritate the other…

During their latest board meeting, the Île-de-France Region officially approved an increase in its subsidies to encourage Francilians to adopt daily cycling.

Starting in September 2023 (you understand the reason below…), a local subsidy of 100 euros will be offered to youth aged 15 to 25 for the purchase of a mechanical bike (meaning without electric assistance). Additionally, the same bike, or older models, can benefit from up to 200 euros for the installation of an electrification kit.

Finally, and this is ultimately the most attractive offer, Île-de-France extends the purchase aid up to 400 euros (capped at 50% of the purchase price) for folding bikes (convenient for public transport), electric assist bikes (MOBI), and mechanical cargo bikes, up to 600 euros for electric cargo bikes (for family use and to replace a car), and up to 1200 euros for bikes adapted for people with disabilities incompatible with traditional cycles.

However, it should be noted that the subsidy has been “reduced”: when capped at 400 euros now, it used to be up to 500 euros until August 31, 2023. That is why the Region has decided to wait until September to update its aid schemes…

The 2023-2024 plan also includes other initiatives, such as creating 10,870 new bicycle parking spaces near train stations, with the goal of deploying 140,000 spaces by 2030.

Lastly, to replace company vehicles, the Region will offer professionals, starting in 2024, a subsidy of 150 euros per year per bike (up to 3 bicycles for companies with fewer than 50 employees). Watch out for workplace accidents…
