Driving while recharging your vehicle will be possible soon

On the A10 motorway along the Paris-province corridor, two sections for electric heavy goods vehicle induction charging will be installed and tested.

Two test sections will be carried out starting September 2023, along the Paris-province axis on the A10 motorway. Two dynamic charging solutions will be installed for heavy trucks. They are based on induction technology, similar to that used with mobile phones, as well as conductive rail technology.

Who will be able to benefit from it?

Currently, no one yet; this innovation will only be available in 2026 on the two sections. But ultimately, electric heavy goods vehicles will be the first to be able to use this new charging technology. The goal of this idea is to enable charging of electric trucks on heavily trafficked routes. It should be noted that, for now, this will only be available on the two highway sections in 2026.

A study at the origin of everything

In July 2021, the Ministry of Transport published a study regarding electric roads. The aim of this study was to compare the two charging technologies and then test them on a dedicated section, namely the A10. Another objective of this initiative is decarbonizing freight movement linked to trucks. A deployment plan is scheduled so that by 2030, 5,000 km will be equipped with this technology, and 9,000 km by 2035.

This idea is already in development in other countries

France is not the first country to adopt this solution to reduce CO2 emissions. The United States, Germany, Italy, and mainly Sweden have begun exploring this concept. Concerning the Scandinavian country, the government has launched a call for tenders to create the first commercial section in the country.
