The Japanese manufacturer launched its small electric city car in 2020, but a second vehicle of the same type might not see the light of day.

In an interview with our colleagues at Autocar, Rebecca Adamson, Honda’s European market director, hinted that a second city car is not in the company’s plans. The manufacturer prefers to focus on the SUV sector, an area where the brand is well established.

A market leaning towards SUVs

During the launch event of the e:Ny1 in Norway, Rebecca Adamson stated that Honda would follow market demands, particularly the SUV segment. She notably declared “There will not be more cars the size of the Honda E. I can confidently say that”.

Within the company’s SUV lineup, much more common models include the CR-V, ZR-V, and HR-V. All are hybrid vehicles. Recently, the e:Ny1, a 100% electric vehicle, was added to the range.

A failure for the city car?

In September 2022, the small Japanese city car sold “only” four units in France. Overall, 148 units were sold in France last year. A figure that discourages further development of a model that isn’t performing well. The main issue was the price. Today, it is 42,100 euros, with a minimum power of 154 horsepower.
