What does a Tesla connect to when it’s parked? (video)

While it is still possible to vandalize a Tesla, know that it records what happens around it and alerts you if necessary.

“Smile, you are being filmed!” The video serves as proof for insurance claims but also as a defense to dismiss the behavior of certain road users. Our society is heading toward a world where image will be your best tool for defense, both physical and legal.

All Tesla vehicles manufactured since 2021 come equipped with a 360° dashcam and a Sentinel Mode that, when the car is locked and in Park mode (Parking), activates surveillance around it. And if needed, the Tesla can alert you if it detects a threat.

At the same time, the turn signals and siren activate, along with a warning message on the central screen informing the aggressor that they may be filmed. All footage of the event is then stored on a pre-formatted USB key located in the glove compartment.

By default, and depending on the country, Sentinel Mode is disabled. It is up to the owner to activate it voluntarily by saying “Secure my Tesla” or “Activate Sentinel” via voice command.

Important detail: Sentinel Mode requires a battery charge above 20%, otherwise it disconnects. Finally, when the car is being monitored, remote “Over the Air” (OTA) updates are impossible.

Know that even without an alert, you can, via your smartphone, view what is happening around your Tesla when Sentinel Mode is active, within a limit of 15 minutes per day. The car’s exterior lights blink, and a message appears on the central screen informing passersby that you are filming them using the cameras…
