Pirelli Elect

Pirelli was heavily present at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich, equipping nearly a third of the electric vehicles showcased.

These cars were fitted with products from a wide range of the Italian manufacturer’s lineup, from the sporty P Zero to the all-terrain Scorpion, but all carried the Pirelli Elect mark indicating tires specifically designed for electric cars.

Tires subjected to specific constraints

First and foremost, to power the engine, energy is needed, and this is provided by batteries that are still very heavy despite the remarkable advances made in recent years. During cornering, this additional weight results in greater lateral stresses on the tires.

An electric car does without a gear box because power is transmitted immediately once the motor is energized. This means a significant amount of torque is available with the slightest press on the right pedal, leading to blistering acceleration figures even in entry-level models. This time, the tire faces constraints in the longitudinal direction.

Pirelli chooses a decarbonized future

Since its launch in 2019, the Elect technology has already surpassed 300 approvals. These are tires specifically adapted to the unique needs of these new technologies, and the demand for these products has logically exploded. Compared to the same period last year, new approvals in the first half of 2023 increased by nearly 125% compared to last year. The only hydrogen-powered vehicle at the IAA Mobility Show, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, was also equipped with Pirelli tires. P Zero marked FSC, the only tires in the world made with natural rubber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
