Lucid Motors is releasing a two-wheel-drive version of its Air sedan, now less expensive and therefore more threatening to Tesla.

Lucid Motors simply lacked insight at the start, and now the American manufacturer is returning to more pragmatic grounds. Over the past few months, it has been lowering its prices to gain a foothold. It’s not easy against Tesla and Rivian in the US market. And even more so with only one offering — a large, not-so-elegant, and not very sporty Air sedan.
Whether for this reason or not, Lucid Motors has just added a rear-wheel-drive version to its lineup, called Air Pure, with only two driven wheels. Its price has been cut by $5,000 and now stands at $77,400 (about €73,500). As always in the United States, this price excludes local taxes (each state has its own VAT policies). Power drops to 430 hp and range stabilizes at 659 km. 0 to 100 km/h acceleration takes 4.7 seconds.
Tesla quickly responded by lowering the price of its Model S — all-wheel drive, 651 km range, and 0 to 100 km/h in 3.1 seconds — to $71,090 (about €67,500). The battle has just begun.
