Tesla Cybertruck: Towards a Massive Cancellation of Reservations?

A phenomenon of resale and speculation of Tesla Cybertruck reservation tickets is developing, leading to cancellations.

It was to be expected. Announcing two million pre-orders for its electric pickup Cybertruck, Tesla knew that the reality would be less exciting once everyone had recovered from their enthusiasm…

Among this mass, there was notably a large segment of “early adopters” for whom paying a $100 deposit was not an issue, especially since the amount is refundable if they change their mind. For Tesla, it was fresh money to develop its Cybertruck at low cost, as if it were a participatory product supported by a crowd fund. Well played!

But now, as the delivery date of the first units approaches, more and more enthusiasts are trying to get rid of their reservation tickets. In the United States, resale ads are blooming on eBay, sometimes with outrageous offers: from $5,000 to $10,000 for the “skip-the-line” coupon to be among the first to be delivered.

This speculation phenomenon is not at all new, but there may be some “dupes” involved, because Tesla does not intend to be fooled this way. Once the owner of the reservation ticket is identified, the American manufacturer will proceed with its cancellation, outright.

As soon as opportunists who thought they could make a big profit by reselling their ticket understand that their dream will collapse, how many will ask for a refund of their $100 deposit rather than be forced to pay the remaining amount for the purchase? Is the hype around the Cybertruck actually as big as they say? The recent auction at the Petersen Museum can be considered a fiasco.

Tesla, in a way, is caught in its own trap of hyper-médiatisation of its Cybertruck. While the pickup market is certainly very large in the United States, it remains difficult to assess in other European and Asian markets where this category of vehicle has never really taken hold.
