Skoda Presents Its New Superb Sedan and Wagon

The great Skoda is renewing itself and returning with upgraded engines and technologies, but always with record-breaking interior space.

It’s the story of a brand that, 25 years ago, began its transformation at the end of the Cold War. Once considered a car for the poor, Skoda has climbed the ranks, one step at a time, launching relevant, clever products, and always well priced.

Once its legitimacy was established, the Czech brand attempted the large sedan, the Superb, in a market then dominated in Europe by Mercedes, Audi, and Volkswagen. The first generation appeared in 2001 and sold 137,000 units. A second followed in 2008: 618,000 units. Then a third in 2015: 845,000 units. Since then, the automotive landscape has changed significantly with the advent of electric vehicles, Tesla, and many Chinese manufacturers.

Today, the 4th generation emerges, with a more bourgeois design, but it is the customers who demand large sedans with lines that are not necessarily very distinctive. Its cousin, the Volkswagen Passat, has been described as “washed out” in personality a few weeks ago.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter, because this is not what we expect from the Skoda Superb, but rather its spaciousness, of which it is a true expert. How can it offer so much room inside when competitors can’t? And still with the station wagon version.

Engines

Of course, the trend is toward electrification. Not 100%, but hybridization. Thus, the Superb benefits from a range of three gasoline engines, two diesel engines, and a plug-in hybrid version with an electric mode reaching 100 km. Perfect to boast a consumption of 0 liter / 100 km. Power outputs range from 150 to 265 hp, while the only transmission offered is the DSG dual-clutch automatic.

The plug-in hybrid version is only available in the station wagon. Its 25.7 kWh battery can be recharged at home with 11 kW power, and up to 50 kW at fast charging stations.

Finally, the most powerful versions are equipped with standard all-wheel-drive.

Exterior

Right from the start, the new Skoda Superb is available in two body styles: sedan or station wagon. For energy efficiency, the lines are more taut and aerodynamic. The sedan’s drag coefficient drops by 10% to 0.23, while the wagon’s drops by 15% to 0.25.

At launch, six colors will be offered (white, metallic gray, black, blue, red, and green tea). The wheels are fitted with tires ranging from 17 to 19 inches in diameter.

The other major point of pride for the Superb is the LED headlights, which are more energy-efficient yet 40% brighter.

Interior

Let’s start with the essentials: thanks to a slight increase in its exterior dimensions, the sedan’s trunk has gained 20 liters (645 liters), and the wagon’s 30 liters (690 liters).

Inside, the large digital screen, wide seats, and numerous thoughtful details will make long journeys very enjoyable and comfortable. The finish and onboard technology are on par with the best German and global standards.
