The Toyota Hilux icon switches to hybrid

The Hilux, Toyota’s iconic pickup, is receiving its first 48 V hybrid powertrain.
Today, the Toyota Hilux is produced in six different countries and marketed in over 180 countries and regions worldwide. Since its launch in 1968, 21 million Hilux units have been sold globally.
With the new Hilux Hybrid 48V, Toyota is introducing electrification to its legendary pickup lineup for the first time to offer greater efficiency. The powerful 2.8-liter diesel engine of the Hilux is enhanced by the addition of a 48V hybrid system designed to meet the specific needs of pickup customers. Using a belt system, the thermal engine drives a compact electric motor-generator that charges the new 48V lithium battery, small enough to be installed under the rear seats to minimize impact on the cabin, and weighing only 7.6 kg. This 48V battery also powers the vehicle’s 12V system via a new DC/DC converter.

The powerful and proven 2.8-liter diesel engine, DACT, 16 valves, compliant with Euro 6d standards, produces 204 hp (150 kW) at 3,400 rpm and 500 Nm of torque between 1,600 and 2,800 rpm. Once charged, the battery adds up to 16 hp (12 kW) of power and 65 Nm of torque to the thermal engine via the motor-generator to improve performance and efficiency.

For the first time on a Hilux, the new Multi-terrain Select system offers even better performance and control by allowing the driver to adjust vehicle stability control based on driving conditions. It can be operated automatically, or the driver can choose one of five preset options – Land, Sand, Mud, Deep Snow, or Rocks – calibrated to regulate power and wheel slip to improve traction and maneuverability.
The new Hilux Hybrid 48V will arrive at European Toyota dealerships in mid-2024.
