Shaken, the Volvo EX30 lowers its price in Germany

Even before being delivered to its first customers, the Volvo EX30 is already revising its price in Germany to stay competitive.

The outlook darkens for the charming little Volvo EX30. As usual, the troublemaker Tesla has caused quite a stir in the European automotive market by deciding, on January 17, 2024, to cut the price of its best-seller Model Y by 3,000 to 5,000 euros depending on the versions.

Now offered starting at 37,990 euros, Tesla’s SUV may have just doomed the Volvo EX30’s in-vitro career. It no longer seems relevant in terms of price/performance ratio. This is why Volvo has already decided, in Germany, to lower its price by 910 euros. Will that be enough?

A pricing position to reconsider?

Thus, the Volvo EX30 Core (Start in France) now starts at €36,590, compared to €37,500 in France. Unfortunately, at this price point, its features still struggle to compete with the Tesla Model Y. Also its direct rival: the Renault Megane E-Tech, which is much cheaper and more generous in every aspect.

With only 344 km of WLTP range, or about 300 km real-world, the Volvo EX30 Start is limited to daily trips. For long-distance drivers, at least the Extended Range version, priced at 4,200 euros… in France, will be necessary. In Germany, to recoup the initial discount, this larger-battery version incurs an additional cost of 5,200 euros. So we’re back to square one…

To be well-positioned in the electric market, the Volvo EX30 should be priced at 35,000 euros. Will Volvo be willing to accept this, in order to maintain its “Premium” status? Is the customer willing to pay for that status when the entire automotive market is gaining in quality, finish, and connectivity? Only the future will tell.
