Carbon wheels on the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N NPX1

The lightweight wheel specialist Dymag introduces a new hybrid carbon model on the IONIQ 5 N NPX1.

Showcased at the 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon, the IONIQ 5 N NPX1 aims to be Hyundai’s technological showcase for electric vehicles and its N Performance sports division. The choice of these lightweight hybrid carbon wheels developed by Dymag aligns with this goal.

Combining an exterior composite carbon fiber rim with a precisely machined forged metal center piece, this hybrid technology from Dymag allows for the best of both materials. In addition to significantly reducing unsprung mass, the carbon hybrid wheel technology also reduces rolling inertia and provides enhanced stiffness and strength.

Marriage of Aluminum and Carbon

This 21-inch wheel, custom-designed for Hyundai, features an attractive five-spoke forged aluminum rim painted in satin black. Combined with the carbon fiber outer rim, the N Performance wheel weighs less than 10 kg, that is 7 kg less than a traditional cast alloy version.

In addition to reducing unsprung weight and inertia, the gyroscopic force is also diminished, enhancing steering feel and handling.

Resistance and durability are also improved compared to equivalent alloy rims or full carbon wheels. Moreover, a hybrid carbon wheel enhances safety by being able to fold and bounce back in case of unusually high load or violent impact, unlike monobloc aluminum wheels that may deform or break.

Last but not least, hybrid carbon wheels also offer aesthetic advantages over solid carbon fiber wheels, with greater freedom in shaping options.
