New Opel Frontera, small hybrid and 100% electric SUV

Opel resurrects the name Frontera for its new square-shaped SUV equipped with electrified powertrains, or even fully electric.

The mystery had somewhat cleared up as the official presentation neared. From a very large SUV in the style of Peugeot 5008, it was understood that the Frontera would ultimately be more of a spacious competitor to Renault Captur and Peugeot 2008. In reality, it’s a copy-and-paste of the Citroën C3 Aircross already sold in South America.

This aspect sends a rather strange signal to customers, combining industrial pragmatism, but also recycling and rebranding of a vehicle that is no longer very new.

The major modernization campaign for the Citroën C3 Aircross obviously includes exterior changes with a design characteristic of Opel. Notably a large, minimalist, glossy black grille. The rear is more complex, with two-part lights and the broad placement of the Frontera name.

Under this exterior, the biggest innovation is found: the integration of lightweight hybrid powertrains with 48-volt mild-hybrid systems and 100% electric variants from launch. The latter aspect is the most striking, as vehicles not originally designed to be electric are rarely the most efficient. Storage capacity, range, driving behavior with a mixed weight distribution, trunk capacity—all these details have not yet been communicated by Opel.

The most impressive modernization might be inside, with a large digital dashboard. Two 10-inch LCD screens are positioned in front of the driver, with the central one facing directly at him.
