The Volvo EX90 on a Charleston Step

Volvo has launched production of its large 100% electric SUV EX90 at its American factory in Charleston, South Carolina.

The EX90 expands Volvo’s 100% electric range and represents a paradigm shift for the company, as it is the first vehicle from the brand equipped with core computing technology, a technology that ushers in a new era of safety for Volvo vehicles.

One might have expected the Swedish manufacturer, which is now under Chinese ownership, to produce in China or Europe, but that is not the case. Volvo has chosen its American factory, which opened in the summer of 2018 near Charleston. The Charleston factory currently produces the new EX90 and the S60 sedan, and it has a production capacity of up to 150,000 cars per year. Recently upgraded, it has significantly renovated and expanded body and paint shops, and most importantly, a state-of-the-art battery production line. Moreover, Volvo is a major player in the American market and has enjoyed a strong reputation there for nearly 70 years thanks to a network of 281 dealerships spread across 47 states. The EX90 is touted by the brand as the safest Volvo to date, relying on next-generation active and passive safety technology and software powered by data from multiple sensors. 100% connected, it also benefits from updates based on Artificial Intelligence and real-time data collection.
