Peugeot lowers the price of the E-308 electric!

Peugeot launches an entry-level series to try to revive the momentum of its 100% electric E-308.

It’s hard to find major flaws in the Peugeot E-308 except, of course, its price. Since its launch, the electric lion has established itself as an excellent car, but its prices prevent it from competing on equal terms with the Chinese productions from MG or BYD and of course the giants like Tesla. Peugeot is aware of this and announced in May an entry-level trim. Named E-Style, it features a 156 hp powertrain and a 54 kWh battery. Is this enough to challenge MG models priced under 30,000 euros and Teslas under 40,000 euros?

The price will undoubtedly be the key to the success of this version. The E-308 E-Style is listed at 41,230 euros, or 37,230 euros after deducting the ecological bonus of 4,000 euros. It is positioned below the Allure and GT trims, which are respectively 1,360 and 3,640 euros more expensive. It’s a commendable effort, but it lacks that wow factor that a version under 35,000 euros could have generated. There is indeed a leasing offer at 249 euros per month for 37 months for 10,000 km per year, but to qualify, one must benefit from the conversion bonus and pay an initial lease payment of 6,650 euros. This is quite discouraging in our view when MG offers its entire range with monthly payments without a down payment for nearly equivalent rates.

It’s a shame because this E-Style has everything it needs, including beautiful 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone air conditioning, a heat pump, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, two large 10-inch screens, and LEDs at both ends. The 450 km of range and the ability to charge from 20% to 80% in 30 minutes at a 100 kW charging station place it within the norm, neither worse nor better. This somewhat summarizes this model: Good, but not great.

With the manufacturer’s warranty of 8 years/160,000 km Peugeot Allure Care, this E-308 remains a reasonable, smart purchase without any unpleasant surprises. Quite the opposite, as the car is a joy to drive daily. However, to attract customers beyond the loyal lion supporters, a bit more effort on pricing will be necessary.
